Sleep My Child
Sleep my child, and peace attend thee, All through the night.
Guardian Angels, God will send thee, All through the night.
Soft, the drowsy hours are keeping, Hill and vale in slumber sleeping.
Love, alone its watch is keeping, All through the night.

Sleep My Child was written for Dr. Thomas Bough's first-born son Stephen. The introduction utilizes an improvisatory section that invites members of the band to create their own parts using fragments of the melody. A wide palette of percussion sounds, plus snapping and "wind" sounds, are used to suggest wind chimes in a storm. As the storm calms, the familiar melody of the lullaby is played by solo clarinet, joined by euphonium, then builds to the full ensemble. A number of traditional songs for children are woven into the texture, including an original lullaby written by Dr. Bough's wife. Pleasant counterpoint, interesting harmonic shifts, and a "cantus firmus" statement of the melody by the low brass and low reed sections of the band create a different sound that your audience will remember and enjoy.
